I Am Being A Slacker

Landslide It only takes a minor slip to start a landslide. The problem with following a diet and exercise plan so vigorously is that when the goal is met you feel “free”. Since I completed the Body For Life Challenge I have not been tracking food or workouts very well and basically I have been slacking off in a major way. I have made a few very feeble attempts to get back on track without success. I think the issue is that I have not set concrete goals for what I want to accomplish next. So today I will think about what I want my next goals to be. This time I will have 6 weeks to accomplish them making the end date on Memorial Day.

Results Week: The After Photos

Ok so here is an after photo. It is not one I submitted but you get the idea. 7000 people entered last year so the chances of winning are not very good but at least I gave myself the my best chance I could. Anyway the real victory is that I actually followed through with it. The essay questions and pictures have been mailed so it is out of my hands. I won’t hear a thing until December so… I guess that is that for now.

Results Week: The Fitness Goals

karensback Below are the results of my fitness goals outside of just generally getting in better shape. I definitely met that overall goal – mostly by playing volleyball incessantly. Again, an after photo will be posted tomorrow. I guess the picture to the left there is kind of a preview. Yeah, that’s me.

Pull-ups (dead hang)
Goal: 10 consecutive
Starting: about 1.5
Today: 8
Note: I was really close but didn’t quite make it all the way to 10. For my next round one of my goals will be to get 12.

Push-ups (military)
Goal: 25
Starting: 5
Today: 26
Note: Got that one! They never seemed to get any easier. Just the capacity increases. The next round will to include a goal about burpees instead of pushups because mine are really slow and very ugly:

Run a 5k
Goal: 7:30 per mile
Starting: In January I ran as fast as I could in the cold at 8:45s.
Today: No idea
Note: This goal fell by the wayside when I realized that for the weight loss goal I was getting better results from the hiking. However for the CrossFit training I will be doing miles of sprints so this goal is going to resurface for sure.

Sit-ups: It was not a goal, per say, but I also did over 6000 sit ups in those first 12 weeks. In the next round I will have a goal to get better at toe to bars. This girl starts with a demonstration of knee to elbows. You can see toes to bars at 1:03. Be sure to watch the freakish guy at 2:00 demonstrating windshield wipers:

Results Week: The Weight Loss

resultsIf I have learned anything it is that it will take me a lot longer than 12 weeks to meet all my goals. But at least I have conquered a few. Obviously, the first was the weight goal. I have gained back a little which I had planned to do since 130 is a little low for me. I am happier at about 135-137. Just need to put the brakes on now before some real weight starts creeping back.

Starting weight: 157
End weight: 130
Current weight: 135

An Amazing Experience

2_nails Yesterday was surreal. After my final hike I got my nails done at a place that had been totally remodeled and fitted with a row of new massage chairs. I fell asleep. That was the best massage chair I have ever sat in. Oh man, where can I get one…

By noon I was at the studio where I met an adorable woman named Amanda who was assigned to spray tan me. Spray tanning was a very strange experience. I stood naked in a pop up tent and she spray painted me like a car. I was not sure I wanted this done at all since it is so out of style to be really dark these days. Super dark tans no longer make people think of relaxing on the beach but of skin cancer. However I was very pleased with the result, just a shade or two past my normal color and not a hint of orange. She did a fantastic job. (No, that’s not me in the picture! That is a model.)

Next was make up and hair done by the lovely and talented Jen Murphy. Such a professional! In a very short time she transformed me from Plain Jane with no make up and wild hair to ‘Whoa!’ I told Todd I would probably look like a 13 year old in dance recital with a bunch of make up on me. Either that or a hooker. Far from it! Jen was truly an artist and took really good care of me. This is Jen:

Finally there was the photos. Before yesterday, I could think of nothing more uncomfortable than putting on a bikini and high heels, standing in a cold room, and having someone bark orders and snap photos. I had dreaded this day since the beginning of the challenge.

Yet when the time came, Rob Hawthorne made it seem like a piece… of… cake – like something I had done a dozen times before. He had to provide a lot of direction but did not let on for one second that it was anything but fun for him. I felt totally relaxed. In the middle of the photo shoot, a group of business men walked in and Rob ran over to show them my before photos. Their reaction to how far I had come boosted my confidence even more. One of them said, “Ok, seriously. What are you trying to sell me?” like he almost couldn’t believe it. That got a BIG smile from me.

Rob made it so much fun that I could have easily kept changing outfits and taking pictures except for one thing. After five hours I realized I was REALLY hungry and I could FINALLY fall off the wagon for a day or two and eat whatever I want! Last night it was Chinese Food. Fried crab cheese wontons, egg rolls, sesame chicken, and vegetable fried rice with ice cream for dessert. I almost cried I was so happy not to be eating steamed beef and vegetables for once. GREAT dinner!

Oh, about the photos. Challenge rules state that I cannot post them until I find out for sure whether or not I am in the running. Once you submit them, they own them. I am going to call on Monday though. I might be able to post one I took in a sports bra and shorts since I am not submitting those. We’ll see. Even if they say yes I still have to build up the courage to actually post it. That is pretty… I don’t know… PUBLIC. Eek!  Either way, on Monday I will let you guys know how the competition works from here on out.

By the way, if you need a spray tan, make up, hair, or pictures an event I highly recommend this wonderful group of talented and experienced people:

Day 77: So Much For Hiking

When the weather recovered from the snow we had last weekend I considered going on a sunrise hike before work today. Here is my view of our alley this morning:

So much for that idea. Remember the pictures I posted the other day of the flowers in my flower bed? Here is my flower bed this morning:

Day 68: Almost There

Day74_are-we-there-yet Days Left: 17

I am under 140!  It is the first time in a very long time. I am getting so close to taking out the bin full of clothes to see if they fit. Not yet though. I have 17 days left and only two pounds to go. My original goal was to lose 20 pounds which would put me at 137. But I knew if I got to this point I would really be shooting for 135. If I can stay on track I should have no problem getting there. It is hard to believe I am so close. Just a few months ago the end seemed so far away that I really wasn’t sure if I could make it. Now that I am so close I have no doubts.

Day 64: The Countdown

Day70_countdown Days Left: 21

With only 21 days left of the before and after photo competition I am really going to concentrate on that goal over the next couple weeks. It is the only New Year’s Resolutions I made that has a real deadline aside from one I assigned so I need to put it first.

Today’s CrossFit Workout:
As many rounds as possible in 12 minutes of:
3 deadlifts at 120# (185# for boys)
6 push ups
10 double unders (jump rope)

I made it through 15 rounds which means in the end I did 45 deadlifts, 90 push ups, and 150 double unders. It was a good score and I was happy with it but I was still slowed way down by the push ups. I used to have to do them on my knees so it has improved a lot. But still, by the last couple rounds I could only do about one push up at a time so they still need work.

Day 62: Three more weeks

Day67_junk-food The reunion with my friends over the weekend was a blast but I definitely fell off the wagon. It started with a Frito. Then it was a lot of Fritos. Jodi brought delicious cornbread. Monica made amazing cookies. Emily came with cheesecake. I ate all of it. Fine, I get Saturday nights off anyway. But it spilled into Sunday with the leftovers. On top of that I did not feel well and skipped volleyball. Then we ended up having pizza and candy for dinner. With only three weeks left before the after pictures I really need to dig in. I still have some butt to work off.

Day 60: My Friends Inspire Me

Every year a group of girls from Greeley joins girls from Boulder
for a reunion at my place. I absolutely love these girls:
